For When You Can Never Find the Time

As my sister had taken a spill, my Marmee and I have taken to putting in many more hours at the shop. Until Amanda recovers (and she must rest), we are getting to know our way around the flow of the whole bakery rather more intimately than we did before. Good can always be found in the midst of chaos. Remember that.

On this Monday, my day of rest (two days late in the week, I know), I'm allowing myself the leisure of a favorite pastime: bed-lounging. Bed-lounging may sound overwhelming and quite frankly scary to those new to the idea. I assure you it is quite safe however extremely addictive. Thank heaven most of us don't have copious amounts of free time in which to fully abuse this hobby or I fear we would.

All one needs to effectively bed-lounge is:

1) A bed. Preferably cushy and adorned with troves of fluffy pillows.
2) A big-gulp of one's favourite hot beverage. Mine for instance is a venti decaf truvia sweetened coffee with enough cream to nearly make a breve. Stir well. Sip often.
3) A book. But not just any book. There is a type of book which Half-Price lovers purchase on a regular basis. It is the "I've always wanted to read something like this-the dust jacket looks promising and one of the reviewers is an author I adore-I should buy this 'cuz I don't need it but I'll probably want to read it if I ever get a spare minute. I'll probably never get around to reading it but I ought to have it" book. Grab one of those books from your shelf.
4) Last Sunday's newspaper (which was also never read.)
5) One's latest to-do busy work. For some a stack of thank-you cards left to be written, for others a blank diary. In my case it is most often my latest knitting.

The idea is simple. So simple most of us overlook it on a regular basis. You must recline in bed, lounge if you will, splay all of your acquired accoutrements about you and leisurely dig in. LEISURELY being the operative. Whatever you do it must be leisurely. This is not work. This is not a task. This is about spending an hour of your time enjoying something small in a very present way. Take this rest seriously!

If you are not a book or newsprint kind of relaxer then by all means keep a tablet or notebook at the ready. Web surf all of those blogs you were meaning to. Email (not for work) a long lost contact. Whatever it takes and at all costs, take time for your self.
